GREENVILLE - Jacksonville's D.J. Pickett scored 30 points as the Cardinals came away with a 73-68 overtime non-conference win over J.H. Rose Wednesday night.
Detrique Baker added 25 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinals.
"Every win is a big win," Jacksonville coach Mike Ark said. "We played some really good team defense in the second half."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 45-37 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Rampants came back. Rose outscored Jacksonville 21-15 to force overtime.
"It's early in the season and we have a lot of work to do," Ark said. "We made some bad decisions but with good effort we were able to overcome it. It's very tough to come into Rose and win."
Some key free throws in the second half sealed the deal for the Cardinals.
"We made our free throws made smarter players and we were able to execute things," Ark said.
Marcus McLatlom had 20 points for Rose.

White Oak 60, West Carteret 51: At Morehead City, Chris Lawrence scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds as White Oak defeated non-conference foe West Carteret.
"We are fortunate to be 2-0," Vikings coach Greg Grantham said. "We played better than the last game (against Havelock). We shot our free throws well and rebounded well. We took them out of what they wanted to do. We played good defense."
The Vikings outscored West Carteret 20-10 in the third quarter. The Patriots made a comeback but the deficit was too much.
"We got off to a good start," Grantham said. "We started on a 7-0 run and we pretty much hanged on from there."
Tyvon Holland scored 10 points for the Vikings.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Jacksonville 48, J.H. Rose 42: At Greenville, Rachel Thompson and Brittany Padilla each scored 15 points to lead Jacksonville over non-conference foe J.H. Rose.
Thompson also snared seven rebounds while Kebra Menifield added 11 points and 13 boards for the Cardinals, who pulled away in the third quarter.
"We didn't execute in the first half but in the second half we did a little better," JHS coach P.J. McManus said. "We were able to get to the free throw line and put away enough and fortunately Rose didn't shoot much better."
Lindsey Corbett scored 12 points for Rose.

West Carteret 59, White Oak 48: At Morehead City, White Oak's Ashley Thornton scored a game-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings fell to West Carteret in a non-conference contest.
Thornton made four 3-pointers and helped White Oak forge a seven-point halftime lead. However, the Vikes were outscored 20-6 in the third quarter.
Rea Segoviano added seven points for WOHS. Bianca Gray tallied 19 points and Michelle Moore added 17 for the Patriots.

Swansboro 45, Jacksonville 30: Jacksonville got most of its players back from football season, but it wasn't enough as Swansboro came away with a non-conference win at Jacksonville.
"It was a tough match for us," Jacksonville coach Brad Skelton said. "We had a couple of kids that are back from playing football. They are getting back in shape for wrestling. We are a young team and each match we are getting better.
Ryan Anderson, Tony Franklin, Gerrick Hendges, Travis White, Hared Haggard, Jacob McCloud, Chaz Martinez and Jackson Coster earned victories for Swansboro.
Ryan Hurd, Steven Walton, Trevor Buck Neel Patel and Darnell Holder won their matches for the Cardinals.

White Oak 48, Richlands 27: At Richlands, new coach Steve Greer got his first win as White Oak defeated Richlands in non-conference action.
"It was a great start for the season," Greer said. "I'm a brand new coach and we are trying to start a program that Ray Bruno left. Everything is clicking and we think we are going to do well. It felt great to avenge from our loss last year."
Ryan Hedgecorth, Wesley Goldsmith, Shawn Eurell, Derek Burris, Anthony Collinson, Harry Jenkins, Terrence Zaleski, Kyle Phillips and Matt Colter won their matches for White Oak.
Steven Looke, Patrick Colb, and Scott Crossman earned wins for the Wildcats.
