All-Area soccer is mixed group

 The 2008 Daily News All-Area girls soccer team is a good mixture of experience and youth.

Of the 36 players selected as one of the Players of the Year or to one of the three teams, eight are seniors, 13 are juniors, nine are sophomores and six are freshmen.

Juniors Stephanie Rose of White Oak and Jaime Edens of Dixon spearhead the all-area list as Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

Rose, a forward, led the readership area in scoring with 44 goals and 17 assists to propel the Vikings to their third consecutive NCHSAA 3-A title. Edens, a defender, tallied six goals and five assists and was a key component in the Bulldogs having a staunch defense en route to their first 1-A state crown.

White Oak is represented on the top team by sophomore defender Rebekah Johnston, sophomore midfielder Shelby Carroll, and junior forward Kristal Tucker. Johnston led a Vikings defense that recorded nine shutouts, Carroll tallied 15 goals and 15 assists, and Tucker added 12 scores and nine assists.

Dixon senior forward Chelsea D'Zurilla also made the first team after posting 24 goals and 10 assists. D'Zurilla scored the Bulldogs' lone score in a 1-0 win over Polk County last month in the 1-A final.

Jacksonville placed three on the first team in junior goalkeeper Jessica Barton, sophomore defender Okina Crawley and senior forward Britney Joiner. Barton was strong between the pipes, but later played in the midfield due to a finger injury. She finished with seven goals and an assist. Crawley scored with two goals and three assists while helping register seven shutouts and Joiner ended with nine goals and 12 assists.

Swansboro and Richlands each had two first-team players. Sophomore defender Alana Soetaert and junior midfielder Carrie Dail made it for the Pirates, while sophomore midfielder Kayla Colon and junior forward Ashley Anctil were selected for the Wildcats.

Soetaert led a Swansboro defense that recorded 10 shutouts and Dail tallied 21 goals and 10 assists. Colon garnered six goals and six assists and Anctil tallied had 13 goals and nine assists.

The second team consisted of White Oak junior goalkeeper Rea Segoviano (nine shutouts), Swansboro sophomore defender Ke-Londa Thomas (one goal, one assist), Jacksonville senior defender Tatum Justice, Richlands sophomore defender Elizabeth Venegas (one goal, two assists), Dixon junior midfielder Jenna Paramore (nine goals, 13 assists), East Duplin senior midfielder/forward Jennifer Halso (12 goals, seven assists), Southwest freshman midfielder/forward Jasmine Jordan (11 goals, three assists), Cardinals freshman midfielder/forward Jessica Josilevich (12 goals, six assists), Bulldogs sophomore forward Alex Scott (29 goals, 17 assists), Pirates junior forward Sarah Mann (18 goals, six assists), and Stallions freshman forward Jeseca Hinds (15 goals, nine assists).

The third team featured Richlands junior goalkeeper Hope Manghane (five shutouts), Lejeune freshman forward McKenzie Hallstrom (12 goals, three assists), White Oak freshman forward Amanda Fenton (23 goals, eight assists), Dixon junior midfielder Amber Reid (11 goals, 15 assists), Bulldogs senior defender Brandi Tingley, East Duplin junior midfielder/forward Tia Rose (10 goals, five assists), Jacksonville junior midfielder/forward Stephanie Spring (seven goals, four assists), Cardinals senior forward Casey Naylor (six goals, three assists), Vikings senior midfielder Kasey Drake (three goals, two assists), Croatan senior midfielder Ellen Gould (15 goals, five assists), Swansboro freshman midfielder/forward Megan Watson (13 goals, eight assists), and Southwest sophomore midfielder/forward Samantha Williams (10 goals five assists).
