Kidd gets win in first game

The Daily News

MOREHEAD CITY - Storm Tootle's goal not only gave Swansboro a win in its season-opener, but provided Doug Kidd his initial victory as the Pirates head coach.

Tootle found the net off an assist from Tim Riggs with about 11 minutes remaining in Swansboro's 2-1 victory over non-conference foe West Carteret on Wednesday night.

"We held strong and found a way to win," said Kidd. "It was a tough game."

Christian Rhue gave the Pirates a 1-0 edge when he scored off an assist from Jason Morton about eight minutes into the contest. But 21 minutes later, the Patriots' Chris Fisher tied the outing and both teams shared momentum in the second half before Tootle's deciding goal.

"We came out and did a good job possessing, we knocked the ball around and found their opening, which is how we got that first goal," Kidd said. "But it seemed as if after we scored we relaxed a little ... and we gave up the tying goal."

Andrew Miller recorded a pair of saves for Swansboro.

Odum found the net off an assist from Jimmy Johnson about 10 minutes in and his second coming off an assist from Patrick Lynch about 17 minutes into the final half.

"We were sloppy, our decision making was not very good tonight," said JHS head coach Dave Miller. "We didn't finish some point-blank opportunities ... this was one of those games where we scored early, relaxed and allowed them to hang around.

"But it's early in the season and we are still trying to put together our starting 10 in the field."

Holland Hammond registered six saves for the Cards.

"Holland did a good job for us tonight," Miller said. "And we didn't play bad defense."

"It took us a while to get started," said Lejeune head coach Glen Davis. "We moved some players up about 10 minutes into the second half and that seemed to fire the players up, because they started producing from there."

James Hansley, Jordan Oliver, Colby Goehagen and Christian Rhodes each scored a goal for the Bulldogs.

"The center and midfielders did a great job of distributing the ball and finding a good amount of players to attack," Sweeney said. "We did not do a good job at possessing the ball and that's what made it difficult for our defense."

Mac Cargile tallied four goals against Southwest on Monday, but this time found the net once. But it was teammate Tyler Vandervender who stepped up to score twice for the Vikings. Both came off free kicks.

"He made good contributions with the free kicks," Carroll said. "He pushed us on through."

Croatan head coach Paul Slater liked the fact his team faced a tough opponent.

"There was a difference mentally between our kids and their kids," Slater said. "They have a lot of kids playing year round where I have only a few.

"That's the reason why we schedule them to make us better."
