Cross country roundup Sept. 17

White Oak sweeps meet

 WILMINGTON -  White Oak's Josh Drew and Jacksonville Ryanna Henderson each came in first place in a Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference meet at Laney High School on Wednesday.

Drew won the boys event with a time of 17 minutes, 16 seconds, while Henderson crossed the finish line first at 19:52. The Vikings' Thomas hart was third at 17:47, followed by the Cardinals' Cal Sligh at 17:56.

White Oak's Rachel Johnston was second at 20:23, followed by Jacksonville's Megan Bucek at 20:32, while the Vikings' Sierra Davis was fifth at 21:58.

"We still have to do, but we hope to be where we want to be at the end of the season," said JHS assistant coach Erin Bockoras. "Congratulations to White Oak for a strong performance ... it's been back and forth between them and us."

Both the Vikings and Cardinals will race at Northeast Creek Park on Wednesday, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Swansboro, Croatan win ECC meet: At Swansboro, Ben Strerett came away with a first-place finish with a time of 17:07 to lead the boys' team to an East Central 2-A Conference win over Croatan and South Lenoir on Tuesday.

"It feels great that the boys are looking good out there," said Swansboro head coach Jennifer Lisowski. "(Sterett) has been training non-stop since last year. They have been working hard over the summer."

The Pirates dominated the top five spots with Mario Colon earning second place with a time of 18:42. Jackson Dick was fourth at 18:47 and Ken Pangborn finished fifth with a time of 19:03.

Brooke Kinsley led the way for Swansboro for first place with a time of 21:41, but it was not enough as Croatan came away with the girls' victory.

"She was very consistent," Lisowski said. "Her timing has been good and she has been in first place in all three races."

The Cougars took the next four spots as Kendra Dorn was second at 22:27, Abbey Fuquay was third at 22:39, Kayla Baker finished at 22:41 and Dana Guthrie finished with a time of 22:59 for fifth place.

TEAM: Swansboro 19, Croatan 44, South Lenoir 72.

INDIVIDUAL: 1st, Sterett (S), 17:07; 2nd, Colon (S), 18:42; 3rd, Jaryd Grace (SL) 18:44; 4th, Dick (S), 18:47; 5th, Pangborn (S),19:03.

TEAM: Croatan 20, Swansboro 43, South Lenoir DNQ.
