Ben Sterrett’s momentum continues.

Four days after he claimed the East Central 2-A Conference title, the Swansboro sophomore won first place in the NCHSAA Eastern 2-A Regionals Saturday morning at Equine Country USA.

Sterrett crossed the finish line in a time of 17 minutes, 9 seconds, six seconds better than second-place Ronnie Sturgil of East Duplin. Sterrett’s outing helped Swansboro to fourth place in the regional while Sturgil paced his Panthers to second place.

Sturgil was complemented by Ronnie Venegas’ seventh-place time of 18:59. John Raborn of Richlands was eighth, Swansboro’s Chris Snyder was 11th and the Pirates’ Andrew Snyder was 15th.

Croatan’s Sam Choate and Kevin Simmons, East Duplin’s Miguel Venegas and Richlands’ Jamar Davis each finished in the top 20.

Brooke Kinsey joined Sterrett as an East Central Conference champion who performed well in the regional. She finished second in the girls race at 21:59, 20 seconds behind First Flight’s Sierra Larson. The Pirates’ Natalie Oshita was third at 22:04 to help her club to third place.

Croatan won the ladies team title, thanks to top-10 outings by Kayla Baker, Kendra Dorn and Erin Piner. Stephanie Ammons and Jessica Coffey were in the top 20 for the Cougars.

Northside’s Erin Mullen and Kendra McArthur, East Duplin’s Kaela Cotton and Southwest’s Areli Garcia-Hernandez were among the top 20 performers.

[]Topsail boys, girls win: Topsail has been dominant in the Coastal Plains 1-A Conference cross country season.

Topsail once again used a team effort to come away with the boys and girls Eastern Regionals 1-A title at Pinetown Northside High School.

“We are very excited,” said Topsail head coach Julie Capps. “They ran a good race and hopefully will run a good race at the state championship.”

Northside was second with 67 points, Manteo was third with 88, conference foe Dixon fourth at 102 and Gates County was fifth at 121.

Zatha Lowen led the charge for the Pirates and finished first with a time of 20:11.

“She has done a great job,” Capps said. “We hope that she will have another great race at the state championship. She’s a very hard-driven runner. She's a great teammate. They work well together.”

Lowen wasn’t the only one from Topsail who ran well. Brittany Zinser was second with a time of 21:10 Other Pirate finishers included Alexis Waters at third in 21:24, Christina Neitzey fourthat 21:30 and Kelsey Davis fifth at 21:37.

Capps said her girls have a lot of confidence going to Clemmons next Saturday forthe state meet at Tanglewood Park.

“They had a great race,” she said. “They are exactly where we want them to be at, they are definitely contenders for state. There are some good runners in the West.”

Dixon qualified for state as well. Lejeune didn’t qualify as a team, but has two runners advancing to state. Valeria Martinez was eighth with a time of 23:08 and Stephanie Hough was 13th in 23:34.

Topsail’s boys scored 35 points for the win, while conference rival Lejeune was second with 63. Northside was third followed by Gates County and Louisburg.

Topsail freshman Tyler Redinger, who was used to winning the boys meets during the regular season, was upset by Corey Davis from Gates County. Davis was 21 seconds ahead of Redinger..

“Most of my boys ran their best time,” said Capps. “They put up a great team effort. I definitely think that they are building up their confidence for the state meet.”

Jimmy Reilly and Tyler Vinser of Topsail also qualified for state. Clint Muskett, Joseph Kramer and Brendan Mulcahy of Lejeune will also head to the championship meet. Tyler Whaley of Dixon also qualified for.
