Swansboro wins in boys, JHS wins in girls

The Daily News

SWANSBORO - Swansboro's boys track and field team didn't rack up plenty of first place finishes, but it earned enough points to come away with a non-conference win over Jacksonville, White Oak and West Carteret in a non-conference meet Tuesday.

Swansboro head coach John Liles said the big impact was on how well his long distance runners performed. His team finished first, second and third in the 1,600.

Mario Colon, who's been Swansboro's second top 3,200 runner, stepped in for an injured player and won with a time of 10:59.

"I think the boys worked really hard this year," Liles said. "Everybody is trying to accomplish one goal and everybody's trying."

Larry Franklin has been a force in the triple and high jump events. He still showed dominance with a 43-feet, 10-inch effort in triple jump and then went 6-2 in the high jump.

"Larry has been consistent in the triple jump and the high jump," Liles said. "I think he's undefeated in both (events)."

In the girls' events, Liles scheduled this event to show his team tough competition before going into the Regionals.

Jacksonville gave Swansboro fits to come away with a win.

Even with the loss, Liles saw some of his players have some of their best performances.

Carrie Dail finished first in the long jump, 100 meters and 400 meters. She finished second in the 200-meter race, but she broke her personal best at 25.8.

"Overall we can always count on Carrie to step up," Liles said.

Ke-londa Thomas came away with a first place finish in the triple jump and Samantha Hammonds also earned first place in the high jump.

"We were really pleased," Liles said. "Thomas got her personal record in the triple jump. Hammonds had her best jump this year. The girls are coming around at the right time."
